Tourists visit the archaeological site of the Despotate of Mistra, a castle town built in the 13th century by the Franks in the mountains near the Sparta region and later given to the Byzantine Empire. Mystras is dominated by 7 important churches. The last Byzantine emperor Constantine Palaiologos was also the despot of Mistra.
